Tami, Brianna, and my mother have all publicly stated I need to branch out with my food choices. Jen has said the privately. One reason I don't spend a lot of time perusing the options at the convenience store is the Overseas Entrants Locator app. That's the thing that quasi-randomly sends my phone a notification that I need to report my location. I say "quasi-randomly" because during the week it happens at meal times.
When I get that push, I am to open the app and tap "I'm Here!" The app then sends my GPS coordinates to the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. Now, the uncertainty in position for a consumer grade GPS system is a few meters. It can tell if I am in the hotel or if I am in the restaurant or further afield. More than a few people over here have expressed frustration with those who ignore the containment restrictions. I'm reading comments on Japan Times, and on the JapanLife sub-Reddit. I'd rather be considered one of the more careful people. That said, here is what I brought back from my trip to 7-11 today.
There's actually a second sandwich in the refrigerator. I planned to eat the ham cutlet for lunch (which I did), and leave the other one for dinner.
A flight crew walked into the store right before me, but I took a little more time making choices. The bag is "Salty Rice Crackers." I haven't tried them yet. The sandwich was okay. Crust-less white bread isn't really my jam. (This is more my jam.) The filling was a ham cutlet, shredded cabbage, egg salad, and "sauce." The best way I can describe the cutlet is to think of a breaded pork tenderloin, but made with a 1/8" thick cut slice of ham and cold. It has good flavor. I firmly believe in the US we under-utilize cabbage as a sandwich topping. Coleslaw just adds so much to shredded pork, hotdogs, cheeseburgers, lunch meat, shredded chicken... Right now I can't think of a savory, meat sandwich that wouldn't be made a little better with a bit of vinegar based coleslaw. Needless to say, I liked the cabbage. The addition of egg salad would have turned Jen away, but this wasn't heavy mayonnaise based stuff. It was pretty much sliced hard boiled egg with mustard and pepper. All in all, I liked the sandwich. It is miles better than airport convenience store sandwiches from the US.
To close out this post, I want to link to a video that Malachi and I saw a year or so ago. I turns out it is part of a series. Enjoy!

I’m glad you branched out (safely, of course). Although I’m sorry it wasn’t quite as yummy as you’d prefer. I hope to hear more about your trip soon. Feel free to reach out any time :)
ReplyDeleteGood.. Makes sense, I never thought about the tracker aspect. And you WILL have time to explore the foods. You are not long in quarantine! Whoo Hooo!
ReplyDeleteOh...and the earthquake made the paper...stay safe!!
ReplyDeleteHmm. You are right, there are not very many whole-wheat options for bread there. But you will find that the baked good have much less sugar, as they do not have the sweet tooth of the Americans. Jason is constantly espousing the benefit of coleslaw on sandwiches. so your diatribe made me chuckle. Can't you just time your trips for when they will be checking on you? You know you are safe. You are vaccinated and have taken all precautions, so I don't think you should feel bad about venturing out to get food. I am a rule-follower, so I would certainly not want to be caught, but it seems you could predict the timing.
ReplyDeleteMaybe. I guess I can wait for this part to end before I do stuff. It could be worse. Patience is the name of the game.
